Humane Society of York County Highlights Pets of the Week and Volunteer Needs

The Humane Society of York County is spotlighting two adoptable animals this week and renewing its call for foster families, volunteers and new hires as kitten season takes hold at the Fort Mill shelter.

The nonprofit rescue, located at 8177 Regent Parkway, has placed 283 animals into permanent homes so far in 2026, including 83 dogs and 200 cats. Staff say the warmer months traditionally drive a surge in stray and surrendered animals, particularly kittens, and the organization is leaning on community support to keep pace.

Meet Augustus

Augustus, a black and white cat estimated to be just over a year old, arrived at the shelter as a stray nine weeks ago. Staff describe him as social and comfortable around other cats, and he can typically be found in the shelter’s Cat Lounge during open hours. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and has been tested.

Meet Splat

Splat, a blue heeler and cattle dog mix, was found running along Interstate 77 before a passing motorist stopped and brought her to safety. The shelter describes her as petite, energetic and intelligent, with the herding instincts typical of her breed. Staff say she would do well with an active household and could excel at agility training. She is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and tested.

The shelter is hiring

The Humane Society of York County is actively recruiting paid staff. Details on open positions are available at the rescue and on its website.

How the community can help

Beyond adoption, the organization is seeking foster families willing to take in kittens during the busy spring and summer months. Volunteers are also needed at the shelter and at the PAWSibilities Thrift Shop and Boutique, the rescue’s primary fundraising operation. The shelter says community members can also pick up baskets of wet laundry, dry and fold the linens at home, and return them.

Items currently in short supply at the shelter include bleach, laundry detergent and blue Dawn dish soap. Financial donations can be made through the rescue’s website, and gently used goods are accepted at the thrift shop. The organization also operates an online store through eBay, with proceeds supporting shelter operations.

Adopting or visiting

The shelter accepts walk in visitors during posted hours, and appointments can be arranged for adoption interviews. Adoption requirements and applications are available on the organization’s website.
