FORT MILL, S.C. — Emergency crews and hazmat teams are currently on the scene of a significant chemical release at the Silfab Solar facility in York County.

At approximately 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, officials reported that 1,530 gallons of potassium hydroxide were released at the plant located at 7149 Logistics Lane. York County later clarified, that the release was actually 300 gallons.

Containment and Public Safety

Despite the large volume of the spill, York County Emergency Management has confirmed there is no danger to the public.

  • Containment: Roughly 1,500 gallons of the chemical were successfully captured by the facility’s onsite retention pool.

  • Response Time: Emergency responders arrived on the scene within three minutes of the initial call.

  • Ongoing Cleanup: A York County hazmat team, along with private contractors, is currently working to mitigate the remaining 30 gallons that were not contained by the primary system.

Impact on the Community

Potassium hydroxide is a highly corrosive chemical used in manufacturing. While it is dangerous upon direct contact, officials reiterate that the spill is localized.

ADVISORY: Residents and motorists are asked to avoid the area surrounding Logistics Lane to allow emergency vehicles room to operate. While the situation is stable, heavy responder presence is expected to remain onsite throughout the afternoon for cleanup operations.

This is a developing story. We will provide updates as more information regarding the cause of the release becomes available.
