I-77/SC 160 Interchange Undergoes Overnight Traffic Shift for Bridge Construction

Motorists traveling on I-77 and S.C. 160 are advised to prepare for significant overnight traffic pattern changes today, May 30th, and tomorrow, May 31st, as construction continues on the widening of the S.C. 160 bridge over I-77.

From 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on both Friday, May 30th, and Saturday, May 31st, all northbound traffic on I-77 will be detoured up and down the existing ramps at the S.C. 160 interchange. This “up and over” maneuver is necessary to allow crews from United Blythe Joint Venture (UBJV), the project contractor, to safely advance the construction of the wider bridge.

Law enforcement personnel and contractors will be on-site at the ramp and S.C. 160 intersection to direct traffic and ensure a smooth flow during the diversion. Drivers should follow their instructions carefully.

In addition to the northbound I-77 diversion, motorists on the southbound side of I-77 should also anticipate some lane closures during these overnight hours. While the primary focus of the diversion is northbound traffic, the proximity of the work may necessitate temporary closures on the southbound lanes for safety and operational reasons.

The purpose of these traffic pattern changes is to facilitate the ongoing construction of a wider bridge structure across I-77. UBJV still needs to install one half of the curved steel overpass, a critical component of the new bridge. This complex work requires the temporary alterations to traffic flow to ensure the safety of both construction crews and the traveling public.
