FORT MILL, S.C. — Rain could not dampen the celebration for the Catawba Ridge Copperheads on Thursday night. For the third consecutive year, the Copperheads are state champions, defeating the St. James Sharks 9-1 in Game 2 of the Class 5A-D2 championship series to complete a two-game sweep.
Catawba Ridge secured their unprecedented third straight title in front of a home crowd that braved the steady downpour, erupting as the final out was recorded.
The Copperheads set the tone for the series on Monday, taking Game 1 with a 9-6 victory. They carried that momentum into Thursday, despite the challenging weather conditions.
Senior slugger Sarah Rocheleau delivered a decisive blow late in Thursday’s contest, launching a three-run home run that extended Catawba Ridge’s lead and all but sealed the victory, while also solidifying her place in Copperheads history.
