A joint resolution filed in the South Carolina House of Representatives would allow the Fort Mill School District to waive two school days that Flint Hill Elementary students missed in March following a chemical incident at the nearby Silfab Solar facility.
State Rep. David Martin (R, York County) announced Thursday that he worked with the Department of Education to draft the resolution, which would give the York County School District 4 Board of Trustees the authority to forgo requiring students to make up the missed days on Saturdays.
“These closures were the result of an incident that occurred beyond the control of our students and families, and they should not be the ones burdened by it,” Martin wrote in a Facebook post announcing the resolution.
Flint Hill Elementary closed on March 5 and 6, 2026, after a chemical leak on property adjacent to the school forced officials to keep students home. The school sits near the Silfab Solar manufacturing plant, which has been the subject of ongoing community concern in the York County area.
Under state law, missed school days typically must be made up, often through added Saturday sessions. The joint resolution would waive that requirement specifically for the two days Flint Hill students lost due to the chemical incident, notwithstanding any other provision of law.
Martin said every member of the local House delegation has signed on in support of the measure. He expected a first reading as early as Friday, with a goal of advancing it to the Senate early the following week and reaching the
Governor’s desk before any makeup Saturdays are scheduled to begin.
The bill jacket lists Reps. Martin, Guffey, King, Ligon, Moss, Pope, Sessions, and Terribile as introducers.
