Fatal Head-On Collision Claims Two Lives in York County

A violent head-on collision on Highway 72 left two people dead and a third person injured on Saturday afternoon. According to a media release from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. near the intersection of Autumnwood Drive.

Investigating officers determined that a 2009 Chevrolet SUV was traveling northbound when it crossed into the path of a 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction. The two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in heavy damage.

The Highway Patrol confirmed that both the driver and the passenger of the Chevrolet SUV sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the factors that caused the SUV to veer into oncoming traffic. Local authorities closed the portion of Highway 72 near Autumnwood Drive for several hours on Saturday to clear debris and reconstruct the scene.
