LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — Investigators are turning to cutting-edge technology to put a face to a mystery that has lingered for over a year. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and the County Coroner’s Office have released a new forensic composite image of a man whose skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area off Bethel Road in November 2024.
The breakthrough comes via DNA phenotyping—a process that uses genetic material to predict physical appearance—provided by Parabon NanoLabs. Authorities hope this digital reconstruction will finally provide a name for the man they believe has been missing for several years.
The Discovery on Bethel Road
The case began on November 13, 2024, when a utility crew worker stumbled upon skeletal remains in the southwestern portion of the county. The discovery sparked an intensive multi-day search involving K-9 units from Foothills Search & Rescue.
Investigators recovered bones and evidence scattered across a 100-yard radius. Early analysis by forensic anthropologists confirmed the remains were human and had been exposed to the elements for a significant period—likely years before they were found.
Who is the “Bethel Road Man”?
While the cause and manner of death remain undetermined, forensic testing has provided a clearer profile of the individual:
-
Ancestry: Primarily Latino.
-
Estimated Age: Approximately 25 years old (with a range from late teens to early 30s).
-
Height: Roughly 5’7” (with a potential variance of four inches).
-
Status: No local missing person reports currently match this profile.
“We want to identify him,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “No doubt he had a family and others who cared about him and must be wondering where he is and what happened to him. We want to answer those questions for them.”
How You Can Help
Coroner Karla Deese and Sheriff Faile are urging the public to study the composite image closely. Even the smallest lead could be the key to identifying the deceased and determining the circumstances surrounding his presence on Bethel Road.
