With Reagan recently turning 15, the conversation in our house is shifting toward more independence. That includes navigating the logistics of getting to events, school activities, or a friend’s house. But handing over that much trust to a digital rideshare platform is tough for any parent. That is why Uber’s latest announcement is such a welcome update.
Following a successful pilot program, Uber is officially expanding its “Women Preferences” feature nationwide across the United States. This new tool is designed specifically to give women riders and drivers more control over their rideshare experience, prioritizing safety and peace of mind.
How the Rider Preference Works

The new option allows women to request trips specifically with women drivers directly within the Uber app.
-
On-Demand or Scheduled: You can choose a woman driver when requesting a ride immediately, or when reserving a trip days in advance.
-
Set Your Default: You can dive into your app settings and toggle “Women Drivers” as your default preference. This tells the algorithm to prioritize matching you with a female driver whenever possible.
-
Be Prepared to Wait: Uber notes that wait times may be slightly longer depending on driver availability. It is a preference to increase your likelihood of a match, not a strict guarantee. If you are in a rush, you can easily switch back to the standard ride option for a faster pickup.
More Control Behind the Wheel
This isn’t just a win for passengers. It gives female drivers—who make up about 20% of Uber’s U.S. workforce—a massive boost in control. Women drivers can toggle on a specific setting to prioritize requests from female riders, allowing them to choose the trips that make them feel most comfortable while earning on the platform.
The Teen Account Advantage
Perhaps the most significant aspect of this update is its integration with Uber’s teen accounts. Parents and guardians managing these accounts can now specifically request women drivers for their younger riders. It adds a crucial layer of reassurance when coordinating transportation for teenagers who are just starting to navigate the world on their own.
Whether you use Uber every day or just for the occasional airport run, this is a major step forward for app safety. Take a moment to update your Uber app this week and check out the new settings.
