In a shift for the state’s agricultural community, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture has announced that the South Carolina Market Bulletin is now available online to the general public without a subscription.
A fixture of the state’s farming landscape since 1913, the Market Bulletin originally debuted as a specialized section in The State newspaper before evolving into a standalone publication. For over 110 years, it has served as a central hub for agricultural news, event listings, and legislative updates.
The move to an open-access digital format is designed to ensure the publication remains a viable and relevant resource in the modern era. By removing the digital paywall, the Department of Agriculture aims to connect farmers with a larger pool of items and services.
Beyond classifieds, the Bulletin continues to feature the “Commissioner’s Corner,” a regular column from the South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture, alongside news releases specifically curated for the state’s growers and producers.
Officials highlighted several key reasons for the transition:
-
Market Vitality: Expanding readership creates a larger ecosystem for those seeking specialized agricultural equipment, livestock, and services.
-
Operational Efficiency: Open access simplifies the user experience for readers and reduces the administrative resources previously required for technical support and digital subscription management.
Despite the digital expansion, the Department of Agriculture remains committed to traditional media. The Market Bulletin will continue to be printed and mailed to subscribers who prefer a physical copy for an annual fee of $15.
