FDA Raises Risk Level on Nationwide Peanut Butter Recall Due to Plastic Contamination

Institutional portion packs in 40 states, including SC and NC, upgraded to Class II health risk.

In a significant update to a public health notice, the FDA has elevated a nationwide peanut butter recall to a Class II risk level as of February 12, 2026. The recall covers a wide array of single-serve peanut butter products manufactured by Ventura Foods, LLC due to the potential presence of foreign material—specifically pieces of blue plastic.

While the recall was originally initiated in April 2025, the recent FDA reclassification signals a formal assessment that these products could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

According to the formal FDA Enforcement Report details for Event 96817, this recall is classified as a Class II event, which indicates that the use of or exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.

What Products Are Affected?

The recall specifically targets single-serve portion packs and “twin packs” rather than the large 16-ounce jars typically found in home pantries. These items are most commonly found in institutional settings like school cafeterias, hospitals, office breakrooms, and restaurants.

Affected Brands & Distributors:

  • US Foods: 0.5 oz and 0.75 oz Creamy Peanut Butter cups.

  • Sysco (House Recipe): 0.75 oz Creamy Peanut Butter.

  • Katy’s Kitchen: Smooth Peanut Butter.

  • Dyma Brands (Poco Pac): Peanut Butter & Grape Jelly or Strawberry Jam twin packs.

  • Flavor Fresh: Creamy Peanut Butter cups.

  • Gordon Food Service: Creamy Peanut Butter.

The contamination was discovered after pieces of blue plastic were found in a production filter during manufacturing at a Ventura Foods facility.

Where Were the Products Sold?

The affected products were distributed to 40 states across the country, including:

Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

What Should You Do?

The FDA classifies a Class II recall as one where the risk of serious injury is remote, but physical contaminants like plastic can pose a choking hazard or cause mouth and throat injuries.

  • Check the Label: If you have single-serve peanut butter packets at home or in a lunchbox, check for the brands listed above.

  • Verify Lot Codes: While many cases have already been pulled from circulation, consumers can check the specific lot codes (such as Lot# D077F01, D079F01, etc.) on the FDA’s official enforcement report.

  • Discard or Return: Do not consume the product. Return it to the place of purchase or dispose of it safely.

As of the latest update, no illnesses or injuries related to this recall have been confirmed. Ventura Foods stated they are working closely with the FDA to ensure all impacted products are removed from the marketplace.
