SCDMV to Issue Revolutionary War Plate

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) will offer a new license plate, available to customers at all SCDMV locations, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

As required by 2025 state law, this plate replaces the “While I Breathe, I Hope” plate previously issued as a standard plate for passenger vehicles and motorcycles. The new plate will be available for issue at all SCDMV branch offices beginning Jan. 2, 2026.

The design and motto of the new “250th Anniversary of the Revolution” plate was approved by the state’s SC250 Commission and will be issued to customers through the end of 2032. The new plate carries no additional cost above standard fees and will be offered alongside the “In God We Trust” plate as the two standard plate options for customers registering vehicles in South Carolina.

Already-issued “While I Breathe, I Hope” plates remain valid until reaching their ten-year replacement point.

The DMV will continue to offer the “250 Year Anniversary Revolutionary War” specialty plate in addition to the standard plate. The “250 Year Anniversary Revolutionary War” specialty plate has been available since 2022.

In addition to the two standard license plate designs, the SCDMV offers dozens of other specialty plate designs, many of which benefit nonprofit, educational, or philanthropic causes. A gallery of the plates available in South Carolina is available on the SCDMV website.
