The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) is kicking off the week with heartwarming introductions and a crucial Public Service Announcement (PSA) for anyone considering adding a furry family member this holiday season.
🐈 Cat of the Week: Schmuckums
Meet Schmuckums, a strikingly handsome gray tabby with a story.
This beautiful boy was brought in as a stray, and while he was microchipped, his original owner ultimately surrendered him to the HSYC. Schmuckums is estimated to be just over 8 years young and is looking for a quiet place to blossom.
What We Know About Schmuckums:
-
Age: Just over 8 years young.
-
Health: Unfortunately, he tested FIV+, but the HSYC notes he can live a normal life and be in a home with other submissive cats.
-
Temperament: Enjoys a quiet environment.
-
Ready to Go: He is neutered, vaccinated, tested, and microchipped.
HSYC is confident that with proper transition time, Schmuckums will become an amazing, loving companion. Give this deserving boy the chance for a furever home!

🐕 Dog of the Week: Blair
Introducing Blair, a sweet young dog who came to the HSYC as a transfer from Animal Control.
Approximately 8 months old, Blair is a sensitive little creature whose past is unknown. She is still figuring out her response levels with other dogs, often coming on “HOT and fast or SUPER submission.” She needs time, attention, and consistency to adjust and learn appropriate responses.
HSYC is confident that with the right person, couple, or family—one willing to give her the patience and love she needs—she will make an amazing addition.
Blair is spayed, vaccinated, tested, and microchipped and is waiting to meet you!

Adoption requirements and process for both Schmuckums and Blair can be found on the HSYC website.
💡 What’s the Scoop PAWS: A Holiday Adoption PSA
If you are considering adding an amazing pet to your family this holiday season, the HSYC urges you to think it through carefully.
Key Considerations for Adopting:
-
Adopt, Don’t Shop: There are countless amazing pets waiting at local shelters and rescues.
-
It’s a Long-Term Commitment: Pets require daily care, training, vet visits, and financial resources for a decade or more. Adoption is for the LIFE of the Pet.
The HSYC strongly discourages adding a pet to a family as a surprise gift due to:
-
Surprise is Risky: The recipient might not be ready, have allergies, lack space, or face unexpected lifestyle changes, which can lead to neglect or abandonment.
-
Holidays Are Hectic: The busy season is not ideal for introducing a new pet.
-
Shelter Overload: Many surprise pets are surrendered to shelters after the initial excitement fades.
HSYC’s Suggestion for the Holidays:
Instead of a surprise, make adoption a wonderful family decision where everyone is on board!
-
Gift Supplies Idea: Present a basket with pet food, toys, a leash, a carrier, and a certificate for adoption fees. Promise to go to the shelter/rescue together as a family to pick out your new companion!
