York, SC –York School District One (YSD1) has launched a five-month community engagement process to select the name, mascot and colors for a new middle school expected to open in July 2027.
The new middle school is being funded by the Bond approved by voters in November 2024 and will be built on Highway 161. Community members have from now through November 10th to complete an online survey to offer their suggestions for the name, mascot and colors of the new school.

“This new middle school represents more than bricks and mortar—it’s a promise to our students and families. Together, we’re creating a place where every child will be seen, heard, and belong, and where the future of York One is built on connection, opportunity, and hope,” said Superintendent Dr. Heath Branham.
Focus groups will review community suggestions and make recommendations to the Superintendent. The Superintendent will present the recommendations to the School Board at a Work Session on January 27, 2026. The Board is expected to take a final vote on the recommendations on February 10, 2026.
