SCETV Premieres Documentary Celebrating Rock Hill’s Vibrant Mural Scene

South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) has announced the premiere of “SC On Display: The Murals of Rock Hill,” a new 30-minute documentary that explores the transformative power of public art in communities and its role in preserving cultural identity. The program premiered on ETV on May 8th at 8 p.m. and will have an encore presentation on Sunday, May 11th, at 3:30 p.m.

“SC On Display: The Murals of Rock Hill” showcases the numerous large-scale murals that adorn downtown Rock Hill, effectively turning the city into a dynamic outdoor art gallery that reflects its history, resilience, and imaginative spirit. Utilizing visuals, including aerial perspectives captured by drone, the documentary guides viewers through Rock Hill’s artistic landmarks, providing insights into the narratives behind the artwork. The film features interviews with the talented mural artists, a representative from the Rock Hill Arts Council, local business owners whose buildings serve as canvases, and proud residents who share the significance of these artworks in their daily lives.

The documentary highlights a diverse range of impactful murals throughout the city. Among these is the Shepard Fairey Mural, a piece that honors Rock Hill’s textile heritage by incorporating visual elements of the city’s industrial past alongside the inspiring phrase “Rise Above,” symbolizing unity and hope. The Dreamer Mural encourages creativity and imagination in children, offering a whimsical and empowering message for younger generations. Near Main Street, the Alleyway Murals speak to themes of resilience and perseverance. The Vernon Grant Mural pays homage to Rock Hill’s beloved illustrator, featuring some of his most iconic characters, including Snap, Crackle, and Pop. Additionally, the Freedom Walkway Murals commemorate local civil rights heroes through vibrant colors and stirring imagery.

Through these compelling murals and the voices of those connected to them, “SC On Display: The Murals of Rock Hill” captures the essence of a community where art serves as a powerful medium for telling the story of the past, reflecting the present, and inspiring the future. As Rock Hill continues to evolve as a cultural destination for both residents and visitors, the film offers a captivating look at how public art enhances shared spaces, cultivates civic pride, and strengthens the community’s identity.

“SC On Display: The Murals of Rock Hill” was produced by Robert Pascucci, Director of Content and Operations at ETV Carolinas, which is located in Rock Hill and is one of SCETV’s four regional studios across the state. Production funding for the documentary was provided by the ETV Endowment of South Carolina, as well as Dick and Jan McCoy.

In addition to its broadcast on ETV, “SC On Display: The Murals of Rock Hill” will be available for streaming on the PBS app, the SCETV app, and on the SCETV website.
