The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced it is rolling out significant changes aimed at bolstering the security of its services and streamlining direct deposit updates. In a move designed to combat fraud and protect beneficiaries, the agency is implementing stricter identity verification procedures and dramatically reducing the processing time for direct deposit alterations.
Strengthening Identity Proofing:
The SSA is transitioning to enhanced identity proofing measures, requiring individuals to verify their identity through their “my Social Security” online account or in person at a local office. This shift comes as the agency acknowledges the need to move away from “antiquated methods” of identity verification.
Over the next two weeks, the SSA will train staff and monitor policy compliance before fully implementing the new procedures on March 31, 2025. After this date, online digital identity proofing through the “my Social Security” account will be enforced. Those unable to utilize the online system will need to verify their identity in person.
Individuals who cannot use the online system can still initiate benefit claims by phone, but they will be required to complete the verification process in person. The SSA recommends scheduling an in-person appointment to complete the claim in a single visit. Similarly, direct deposit changes for those without online access will necessitate an in-person visit or a scheduled appointment via phone.
Expedited Direct Deposit Changes:
In addition to the strengthened identity proofing, the SSA is significantly reducing the processing time for direct deposit changes. Both online and in-person requests will now be processed within one business day, a substantial improvement from the previous 30-day hold for online changes.
To further safeguard against fraud, the SSA plans to implement the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Fiscal Service’s Account Verification Service (AVS). This service provides instant bank verification, proactively preventing fraudulent direct deposit changes.
Addressing Concerns and Ensuring Accessibility:
The SSA’s move to in-person verification has raised concerns among advocates for retirees, who worry about the potential burden on those with mobility issues or limited access to transportation. However, the SSA emphasizes its commitment to ensuring accessibility. Individuals can call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule appointments, and the agency has mandated a five-day in-office work week for nearly all employees to ensure adequate staffing for in-person support.
“Americans deserve to have their Social Security records protected with the utmost integrity and vigilance,” stated Acting Commissioner of Social Security, Lee Dudek. “For far too long, the agency has used antiquated methods for proving identity. Social Security can better protect Americans while expediting service.”
Moving Forward:
The SSA will continue to monitor the implementation of these changes and make adjustments as needed to ensure the smooth delivery of benefits while maintaining robust security measures. Individuals are encouraged to create a “my Social Security” account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount/ to streamline their interactions with the agency.
