CLOVER, S.C. — A student at Clover Middle School was found in possession of a knife and stun gun on Thursday, according to a message sent to parents by Principal Maurice Johnson.
Johnson described the incident as “out of the ordinary” and assured families that students and staff were safe. While specific details could not be shared due to confidentiality laws, he said the situation was being handled in accordance with the Clover School District’s Student Code of Conduct.
The principal also used the opportunity to emphasize the importance of students reporting concerns to staff.
“This situation is an opportunity to remind families of ‘see something, say something,’” Johnson wrote. “A student’s observation and engagement with staff resolved this situation quickly and safely. It is also an opportunity to talk to your student about the seriousness of bringing items such as this to school.”
In response to the incident, Johnson announced on Friday that Clover Middle School has received a new weapons detection system as part of the district’s ongoing safe schools initiative. The system, already in use at Clover High School, is described as lightweight and portable, allowing for flexible use on campus.
Random weapons detection screenings will begin soon at the school, Johnson said, as part of the district’s efforts to enhance student safety.
