Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has provided a new update on its Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE), a $608 million project aimed at modernizing and expanding one of the nation’s busiest airports. The project, which began in 2019, will add 175,000 square feet to the terminal lobby and renovate another 191,000 square feet, significantly improving passenger flow and infrastructure.
Progress and Completion Timeline
According to airport officials, Checkpoint 2 is on schedule to open in time for Spring Break, with the entire expansion set for completion by fall 2025. Originally built in 1982 to accommodate 2.8 million passengers annually, CLT served more than 43 million travelers in 2021, highlighting the urgent need for upgrades.
Key Features of the Expansion
The TLE project includes:
- Larger security checkpoints to streamline passenger screening.
- More baggage claim carousels to improve efficiency.
- Additional concession spaces offering more dining and shopping options.
- New seating areas for improved passenger comfort.
- A 146,000-square-foot canopy to provide protection outside the terminal.
- Two pedestrian walkways connecting the mezzanine level to the Hourly Deck, reducing congestion.
Public Art and Design Enhancements
In collaboration with the Arts & Science Council, the expansion will feature public art installations by eight commissioned artists. Notable works include:
- The Queens Charlotte statue by Raymond Kaskey.
- Suspended sculptures by Danielle Roney.
- A subterranean walkway mural by Catherine Widgery.
With the project moving steadily toward completion, CLT is positioning itself to better accommodate future growth, enhance passenger experience, and maintain its status as a major hub for domestic and international travel.
