Lancaster County Sheriff Warns Residents of Property Tax Phone Scam

LANCASTER, S.C. — The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents, particularly those in the Kershaw area, about a phone scam in which fraudsters falsely claim that victims have unpaid property taxes and demand immediate payment via gift cards.

According to officials, scammers are posing as county representatives and pressuring individuals to make payments through unconventional methods. The sheriff’s office emphasized that Lancaster County will never request tax payments through gift cards, wire transfers, or online payment platforms.

To avoid becoming a victim, residents should never share personal information or send money to unexpected callers. Always verify tax-related claims by directly contacting the county tax office.

Authorities encourage the public to share this warning with family members, particularly elderly or vulnerable individuals who may be targeted. Anyone who believes they have been contacted by scammers should report the incident to law enforcement.
