College of Charleston Launches Initiative to Retain SC Talent

The College of Charleston (CofC) is launching a major, statewide initiative designed to enhance college accessibility for South Carolina residents and retain top academic talent within the state.

Starting in Fall 2026, the new South Carolina Talent Initiative (SCTI) will guarantee that eligible in-state students demonstrating financial need will have at least 65% of that need covered. This coverage will be provided through a strategic combination of scholarships, institutional aid, and grants.

The program is designed not only to help students enroll but also to ensure they persist and graduate. Beyond financial assistance, the initiative will offer crucial resources, including mentors and life-design coaches, to support student success throughout their college careers.

School leaders expect the SCTI will benefit a population roughly comparable to the current low-income student body, which is indicated by the 19% of undergraduates who receive Federal Pell Grants. The college anticipates at least 1,000 students will be recipients next year.

CofC emphasized the program’s inclusive nature, stating that every in-state student who applies is eligible for the various benefits offered through the SCTI. While the 65% guarantee is the cornerstone, the initiative also includes specific opportunities for transfer students, Meeting Street Scholars, and high-achieving students such as valedictorians, salutatorians, and those who graduate in the top 10% of their class.

The College of Charleston is immediately setting aside $4 million to fund the program.
