COLUMBIA, S.C.—The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is requesting public comments on a key interstate project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety between South Carolina and North Carolina. The agency is seeking to amend its 2024-2033 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) to formally include the SCDOT/NCDOT I-77 Coordination Project.
The project focuses on a vital corridor: ensuring the safe and efficient operation of Interstate 77 at the North Carolina/South Carolina border . According to the public notice released on November 3, 2025, the coordination initiative will involve preliminary engineering, securing rights of way, and construction activities, all with the goal of enhancing mobility and connectivity between the two states.
A notable component of the plan is SCDOT’s assumption of management for the existing Exit 90 Improvements from York County, which will integrate into the overall strategy for improving the I-77 corridor’s functionality. The estimated cost for this initial phase of the coordination project is $3 million.
The current public comment period is a critical step in the approval process, giving residents and stakeholders a chance to voice their opinions on the STIP addition.
Time is running out for input. SCDOT will accept public comments for a 21-day period, which began on November 3, 2025, and concludes on November 23, 2025.
Comments may be submitted in several ways:
* Online: Visit the SCDOT website’s Public Comment Notices section.
* Email: Send comments to [email protected].
* Mail: Address written comments to Ginny Jones, Public Involvement Director, SCDOT Office of Public Engagement, P.O. Box 191, Columbia, SC 29202.
The department encourages anyone without internet access to review printed copies of the press release and supporting information at any SCDOT District Office or South Carolina Council of Government Office.
