Celebrating National Newspaper Week
As communities across the nation celebrate National Newspaper Week, YoCo News proudly reaffirms its mission to make local news free, accessible, and community-driven for every reader across York and Lancaster counties.
It started with a simple idea: bring daily local news to our community, free of charge. In an age when many outlets prioritize national headlines or lock local stories behind subscriptions, YoCo News was founded to do the opposite—to focus entirely on the people, events, and issues shaping life right here at home.
From a Simple Idea to a Regional Network
The story began in June 2023, when Thomas Hyslip launched The Tega Cay Sun to provide daily hyper-local coverage focused on city news, schools, sports, and community events. What started as an online publication quickly grew in popularity, leading to the debut of a monthly print edition in October 2023, available throughout Tega Cay.
Building on that success, the same vision expanded to serve a broader audience with the creation of YoCo News in November 2024—bringing daily local reporting to the residents of York and Lancaster counties. The site continues to grow rapidly, and a monthly print edition will debut in Spring 2025, featuring distribution stands with the YoCo News logo in public spaces across the region.
Together, The Tega Cay Sun and YoCo News now attract over 300,000 unique visitors each month across their combined websites and Facebook pages, showing the reach and power of local journalism with no paywalls.
A Mission Rooted in Community
At YoCo News, our mission is simple yet powerful: bring back the look and feel of a true local newspaper while bridging the gap between larger media outlets and the community stories that impact residents most.
We believe that local news should never be hidden behind a paywall. Every resident deserves access to accurate, timely, and meaningful reporting—whether it’s coverage of local government meetings, profiles of community leaders, student achievements, or updates on regional growth and development.
We also believe in supporting local businesses, offering upfront, affordable advertising opportunities that strengthen community connections while keeping our publications free for all readers. Our business partners aren’t just advertisers—they’re neighbors and collaborators who share our commitment to the communities we serve.
Redefining Local Journalism
As we celebrate National Newspaper Week, YoCo News and The Tega Cay Sun are proving that local journalism can thrive without subscriptions or paywalls. By combining daily online coverage with the tangible presence of a monthly print edition, Liberty Media Group is redefining what local news can be—accessible, engaging, and deeply rooted in community values.
We’re not just reporting the news. We’re rebuilding trust in local journalism—one story, one town, and one reader at a time.
