As Clover School District (CSD) students return from Winter Break, a new cell phone policy will take effect, significantly restricting the use of electronic devices during school hours.
Adopted by the CSD Board of Trustees on November 25, the policy aligns with Proviso 1.103 from the South Carolina General Assembly and regulations from the South Carolina State Board of Education. The mandate aims to minimize distractions and foster a more focused learning environment for students.
Under the new rules, students are prohibited from using cell phones from the morning tardy bell until the afternoon dismissal bell. The policy also extends to peripheral devices, including gaming systems, smartwatches, headphones, and earbuds, which will not be allowed during instructional hours.
The district plans to enforce the policy consistently across all schools, emphasizing the importance of compliance and responsibility among students. Teachers and staff will have guidelines to address violations, which may include confiscation of devices or other disciplinary measures.
The decision to implement this policy reflects growing concerns about the impact of technology on student engagement and academic performance. Similar policies have been adopted in districts across South Carolina following state-level directives.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss the new rules with their children and ensure devices are either left at home or powered down during the school day. The district will provide further communication and resources to support families in adapting to the policy.
For more information on the policy or to share feedback, parents can contact the Clover School District office.
