The Fort Mill School District has agreed to pay $200,000 to settle a claim brought by the family of a school crossing guard who was fatally struck while directing traffic more than two years ago.
Stanley Brucker was working at the entrance to Fort Mill Elementary School on Springfield Parkway on March 21, 2024, when he was hit by a vehicle while assisting with school traffic. According to the York County Coroner’s Office, Brucker was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The settlement resolves the family’s claim against the school district stemming from the incident. Details of the agreement and whether it includes any admission of liability have not been released.
Brucker’s death prompted an outpouring of support from the Fort Mill community. He was widely known by students, parents and school staff for helping ensure children crossed safely during morning and afternoon traffic.
The $200,000 settlement brings legal resolution to the case more than two years after the fatal crash.
