In this Fort Mill School Board meeting, which was specially called with a single agenda item, district administrators presented updates to proposed student assignments for elementary and middle schools. The goal was to address community feedback and adjust attendance lines before the final voting meeting. Key details from the meeting are outlined below:
- Purpose of the Meeting: The meeting aimed to present updates to student assignment plans, specifically designed to manage utilization across the district’s elementary and middle schools and address parents’ concerns raised since the last meeting.
- Attendance Zones and Adjustments:
- Elementary Schools: Changes primarily occurred in the district’s upper portion, allowing better alignment with bus routes and new road developments. Adjustments moved some areas to Tega Cay Elementary, helping optimize resources.
- Middle Schools: Similar adjustments were made, maintaining the feeder patterns (keeping groups of students progressing together through schools) to the greatest extent possible. Key changes included moving students in the Holbrook area back to Forest Creek, addressing concerns over maintaining logical geographical boundaries and minimizing transportation burdens.
- Community Feedback and Utilization Concerns: Since the last meeting, administrators received about 200 emails with feedback from both parents and staff. Efforts were made to balance community concerns while ensuring each school’s capacity was managed. Maps were adjusted to show current lines and suggested new ones for clarity. Some neighborhoods, such as the Reserve and Knightsbridge, were specifically mentioned due to the impact of these zoning changes on student distribution.
- Capacity and Growth Planning: The Board reviewed anticipated growth and current capacity. While some schools, like Pleasant Knoll, may experience higher utilization, they are expected to handle future growth without overcrowding due to lower growth rates in their zones. Flint Hill Middle School’s projected utilization rate was raised as a potential concern, given its lower expected student intake, though plans to introduce special programs were discussed.
- Long-Term and Traffic Considerations: The district is proactively addressing infrastructure and traffic impacts, such as approved lights at key intersections and upgraded turn lanes. The goal is to minimize the effects of school zoning changes on traffic patterns.
- Transparency and Next Steps: An updated interactive map showing the proposed changes will be available on the district’s website, and further feedback is encouraged through a designated district email. The final vote on the proposed changes is scheduled for November 5, with the Board open to adjustments if any major new issues arise.
This meeting provided a platform for the Fort Mill School Board to address zoning changes with updated data and community feedback in mind. The Board’s discussion highlighted the complexities involved in balancing growth with logistical challenges such as traffic and capacity management. With the final vote scheduled for November 5, the Board will continue to review feedback submitted through the district’s communication channels to make any last adjustments to the proposed student assignment plan. The updated maps and attendance lines are intended to be accessible to the public online to support transparency and inform residents directly impacted by these changes.
Below are the new proposed maps, enrollments and school feeder patters, as well as press release from the district.
