Ellis Enters Race for State Education Superintendent

The race for South Carolina’s top education post expanded on Tuesday as Lisa Ellis officially filed her candidacy for State Superintendent of Education.

Ellis, a veteran educator with over 25 years of classroom experience, enters the contest with a platform centered on systemic reform and increased support for public schools. Her background is rooted in grassroots advocacy; she gained statewide prominence in 2018 as the founder of SCforEd. The organization was responsible for mobilizing more than 10,000 teachers and supporters for a historic march on the State House to demand better working conditions and student resources.

Building on her 2022 run—where she secured more votes than any other statewide Democratic candidate—Ellis is centering her current campaign on the immediate crises facing the state’s school systems. Key pillars of her platform include:

  • Teacher Retention: Implementing strategies to address the staffing shortages by improving pay and professional respect.

  • School Safety: Enhancing security measures to ensure a stable learning environment for students and staff.

  • Library Integrity: Restoring public trust in school libraries amid ongoing debates over book access.

  • Resource Allocation: Addressing long-standing concerns regarding underfunded districts and underserved student populations.

Throughout her career, Ellis has argued that the state’s educational infrastructure suffers from decades of neglect. Her transition from the classroom to the political arena marks a continued effort to influence policy from the executive level.
