I-77 South Bridge Repairs to Cause Delays Near Fort Mill Aug. 9-19

SCDOT will close two right lanes of I-77 South between Celanese Road and Cherry Road overnight through the week, with more weekly closures expected.

Drivers in the Fort Mill area should expect significant delays on Interstate 77 South from Aug. 9 through Aug. 19 as the South Carolina Department of Transportation performs bridge repairs, according to the Town of Fort Mill.

The work will take place on I-77 South between mile markers 83 and 81.5, from Celanese Road to Cherry Road, the town said. The two right lanes of I-77 South will be closed during the work, and additional weekly closures are expected to follow.

The current schedule includes closures from 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, until 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, and again from 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, until 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, according to the town.

The town said motorists should expect significant delays on I-77 South, including at entrance and exit ramps, and increased traffic on SC Highway 160, US Highway 21, SC Highway 460 and local secondary roads as drivers seek alternate routes. Officials are asking drivers to allow extra travel time, consider alternate routes and use caution in work zones and on local roadways.

The town said it is also working on a longer term traffic solution. Fort Mill has been awarded a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant through the Rock Hill-Fort Mill Area Transportation Study Group to design, engineer and construct an Adaptive Traffic Control System in coordination with SCDOT, according to the town. The system would continuously monitor traffic conditions and automatically adjust signal timing to improve flow and reduce congestion during peak periods, special events, incidents and construction, the town said.

The design, engineering and construction of the adaptive system is expected to take about 18 months to complete, according to the town.
