Three Firefighters Injured Battling Indian Land Structure Fire

INDIAN LAND, S.C. — Three firefighters were injured Sunday while battling a structure fire that prompted a Mayday call and forced crews to switch to a defensive attack, the Indian Land Fire District announced.

Indian Land Fire District crews responded to the structure fire and found heavy fire conditions upon arrival. Pineville Fire Department was first on scene and initiated an interior attack.

Conditions Force Evacuation

As conditions rapidly deteriorated and extreme heat intensified inside the structure, crews were forced to evacuate. A Mayday was declared during the evacuation. According to the fire district, the Mayday was cleared once all firefighters were accounted for outside the structure, and operations transitioned to a defensive attack.

Firefighters Hospitalized

Three firefighters sustained injuries during the incident and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. The fire district reported that all injuries are not life threatening and that all three are expected to make a full recovery.

In its statement, Indian Land Fire District called the incident a sobering reminder of how demanding and hazardous the fire service can be, noting that firefighters place themselves in dangerous conditions every day to protect the lives and property of the communities they serve.
