Mayor Savage and Representative Martin Announce Winthrop University Is Coming to Fort Mill

FORT MILL, S.C. — A major milestone for Fort Mill was announced today as Winthrop University confirmed plans to establish a new presence in downtown Fort Mill, bringing three targeted academic programs designed to support the town’s rapid growth and workforce needs.

The expansion marks the first time a university will have a footprint in Fort Mill, a move local leaders say will strengthen educational opportunities, support small businesses, and create a direct pipeline between students and employers in one of the fastest-growing regions in South Carolina.

The three programs expected to launch will focus on high-demand fields tied to the local economy, including business, education, and applied workforce development. These offerings are intended to serve both traditional students and working professionals, while aligning with Fort Mill’s continued economic expansion.

Nearly ten months ago, the effort began with a conversation between Fort Mill Mayor Guynn Savage and State Representative David Martin about how the town and state could work together to meet the future needs of the community.

During that meeting, leaders discussed how to strengthen the partnership between local and state government, support families, and create new opportunities for economic growth while preserving the character that makes Fort Mill unique. That conversation ultimately led to a shared vision of bringing higher education directly into the community.

“I am proud to announce that Winthrop University will be joining Fort Mill,” Martin said. “Over the last 10 months, I have worked directly with the mayor and Winthrop leadership with the vision of bringing higher education for our families and businesses in Fort Mill. Today is a culmination of those months of work.”

Town officials say the addition of a university presence will have a ripple effect across the community, from increased foot traffic for local businesses to expanded opportunities for students who want to stay close to home while pursuing higher education.

Winthrop University, long recognized for its strong academic programs and regional impact, has deep roots in York County. Its expansion into Fort Mill reflects both the town’s growth and the increasing demand for accessible, high-quality education options in the area.

Mayor Savage emphasized the importance of collaboration in making the project a reality, noting that the partnership between the town, the state, and the university played a key role in moving the initiative forward.

The new Fort Mill location is expected to serve as a hub for innovation, workforce training, and community engagement, further positioning the town as a leader in economic development and educational access in the region.

With planning now underway, local leaders say more details will be announced in the coming months, including timelines, program specifics, and opportunities for community involvement.

For Fort Mill, today’s announcement represents more than just a new academic offering. It signals a long-term investment in the town’s future, its workforce, and the next generation of leaders.
