Dangerous New Synthetic Opioid “Cychlorphine” Detected in South Carolina

The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office has issued a high-level alert to the public and law enforcement following the discovery of cychlorphine, a potent new synthetic opioid, within the state.

These types of synthetic drugs are typically manufactured in overseas laboratories and smuggled into the United States by international drug cartels. Cychlorphine is engineered for extreme potency and high levels of addiction, often making it more dangerous than traditional opioids. Because it is frequently mixed into other illicit substances without the user’s knowledge, it creates a high risk for accidental, fatal overdoses.

A Growing Public Safety Threat

State officials describe the substance as a significant threat to public health. Because the chemical composition of cychlorphine is constantly evolving, it is increasingly difficult for standard testing and detection methods to identify. Furthermore, the drug is so powerful that even trace amounts can lead to immediate respiratory failure or death.

The Attorney General’s Office warned that foreign adversaries and criminal organizations are targeting American communities for profit, with little regard for the resulting loss of life. There is a specific concern for younger residents, as a single exposure to the substance can be lethal.

Safety Measures and Recommendations

In response to the emergence of this drug, the state is urging residents and first responders to follow strict safety protocols:

  • Avoid Illicit Substances: Residents are warned to stay away from any unknown or unregulated drugs.

  • Parental Guidance: Parents are encouraged to have immediate, direct conversations with their children regarding the fatal risks of synthetic opioids.

  • First Responder Caution: Police and medical personnel are advised to use extreme care when handling suspected narcotics, as even incidental skin contact or inhalation could be hazardous.

  • Reporting: Any suspicious activity should be reported to local law enforcement agencies immediately.

The Attorney General’s Office is coordinating with state, local, and federal partners to disrupt the trafficking of cychlorphine and hold those responsible for its distribution accountable. Public health officials emphasize that anyone struggling with substance abuse should seek professional help immediately to avoid the increasing risks associated with the illicit drug supply.
