York County Shines: Tega Cay, Fort Mill, and Clover Named Among South Carolina’s Safest Towns for Retirees

Three York County communities earn top marks in new national ranking highlighting the best places for senior living in the Palmetto State

York County has reason to celebrate. Three of its communities, Tega Cay, Fort Mill, and Clover have been recognized among the safest towns in South Carolina for retirees, according to a newly published ranking by World Atlas, the global geography and travel publication.

The report, titled “8 Safest Towns in South Carolina for Senior Living,” highlights communities across the state that offer scenic surroundings, everyday convenience, outdoor recreation, and a strong sense of community — qualities that make them especially appealing to older adults looking to settle down.

Tega Cay: Waterfront Living with a Side of Golf
Tega Cay claimed one of the top spots on the list, with World Atlas noting the city’s unique geography and lifestyle amenities as major draws for seniors. The city occupies a peninsula in northern York County between Lake Wylie and the Catawba River, placing residents in a waterside setting just minutes from Fort Mill and the greater Charlotte area.

For golf lovers, the city delivers in a big way. The Tega Cay Golf Club threads a 27-hole course through the community, with fairways and greens shaping the landscape throughout. Water recreation is equally central to life in Tega Cay. Windjammer Park offers a sandy swim area and a broad stretch of waterfront along Lake Wylie, and each summer the Carolina Show Ski Team performs free shows at the park, drawing crowds to the shoreline for an iconic local tradition.

Fort Mill: History, Greenways, and Small-Town Charm
Fort Mill earned its place on the list thanks to a winning combination of preserved history, outdoor space, and easy access to urban amenities. Situated in northern York County just below the North Carolina border, Fort Mill benefits from both a preserved historic core and quick routes into Charlotte.

Nature lovers will find plenty to explore. Anne Springs Close Greenway spreads across 2,100 acres with trails, lakes, horse pastures, and the beloved swinging bridge at Lake Haigler. Downtown Fort Mill offers a walkable, historic experience as well, with brick storefronts, local restaurants, and civic buildings lining Main Street in the Fort Mill Downtown Historic District. The Fort Mill History Museum on Clebourne Street rounds out the cultural offerings, tracing Native history, rail development, and the textile era through locally rooted exhibits.

Clover: Small-Town Character with Big Convenience
Rounding out York County’s trio on the list, Clover was recognized for its charming downtown, recreational offerings, and proximity to both Charlotte and Lake Wylie. The town sits near the North Carolina line in western York County, making it an ideal base for retirees who want small-town living without sacrificing convenience.
New Centre Park serves as the hub of outdoor recreation, featuring trails, disc golf, a seasonal splash pad, and an amphitheater all in one heavily used space. Lake Wylie is just a short drive away, offering boating, fishing, and waterside relaxation. Downtown Clover retains its unique character as well, anchored by the historic Larne Building and enlivened by local gems like High Cotton Antiques.

A Region on the Rise
The recognition of all three York County communities in a single statewide ranking underscores the region’s growing appeal as a retirement destination. The full World Atlas ranking also includes Bluffton, Isle of Palms, Travelers Rest, Clemson, and Abbeville. The article was authored by Luca Shams and published March 30, 2026.
