York School District One to Host Inaugural Family Literacy Night Under the Lights

York School District One is bringing families, schools, and the community together for an evening of reading, connection, and fun this spring. The district will host its inaugural Family Literacy Night Under the Lights on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at York Comprehensive High School’s football stadium, located at 275 E. Alexander Love Hwy. in York, SC.

The event is designed to celebrate a love of reading while strengthening the bonds between families, schools, and local community partners. Families are encouraged to bring a book and a blanket and enjoy the evening picnic-style on the turf alongside student athletes and school leaders.

Each YSD1 school and district department will host a themed tent centered around a book that reflects its school community, giving families a chance to explore what makes each campus unique. Community organizations and service providers will also set up tables and tents around the stadium track to connect families with local resources and support services. Food trucks and concessions will be on site, and the night caps off with a Reading Olympics at 7 p.m.

“Family Literacy Night is designed to promote a love of reading while strengthening connections between families, schools, and community partners,” the district said in announcing the event.

The evening is free and open to all YSD1 students and families. Adults or caregivers are required to attend with children.

Community organizations interested in participating as a vendor or partner can contact Jessica Elliott, Parenting Partnerships and Family Resource Center Coordinator, at [email protected]. Organizations must complete a district registration form, and confirmation details will be provided upon approval.
