In response to a sharp spike in fuel prices, State Representative Mark Smith announced plans Monday to introduce legislation that would temporarily halt South Carolina’s gasoline tax.
The proposal seeks to pause the state’s 28-cent-per-gallon tax for a period of 30 days. Smith, who recently entered the race for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District (low country), framed the measure as an emergency intervention to provide immediate financial relief to residents facing rising costs for basic necessities.
Fuel prices across the state have surged by nearly a dollar in recent weeks. Market analysts attribute the volatility to a combination of seasonal demand and ongoing maritime disturbances in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global chokepoint for oil transit. These supply chain concerns have pushed both gasoline and diesel prices significantly higher nationwide.
Representative Smith argued that the state government has a responsibility to act when global economic instability begins to impact the daily budgets of South Carolina families. He emphasized that the current “squeeze” on households—driven by the rising costs of groceries and utilities—makes the fuel hike particularly burdensome.
A primary concern with gas tax holidays is the potential loss of revenue for road and bridge maintenance. To address this, Smith stated his legislation will include provisions to ensure transportation funding remains unaffected during the 30-day window.
The plan involves utilizing existing state resources to fill the temporary budgetary gap, allowing for consumer relief without compromising the long-term integrity of South Carolina’s infrastructure projects.
The bill is expected to be formally introduced later this week. If passed, the suspension would provide a short-term window of lower prices at the pump while the legislature monitors the global energy market. The measure will require approval from both the House and Senate before reaching the Governor’s desk for a final signature.
