Tega Cay, SC — Tega Cay Golf Club is teeing up for an exciting new chapter with the announcement of Eric Downs as the club’s new Golf Course Superintendent. General Manager and Director of Golf, Ty Lefler, shared the news with club members on Friday, marking a significant addition to the leadership team during a year of major facility improvements.
Bringing over 15 years of rich industry experience and a proven track record of maintaining championship-level playing conditions, Downs is poised to help elevate the Tega Cay golfing experience.
A Wealth of Turfgrass Experience
Originally hailing from Dallas, North Carolina, Downs brings a deep understanding of the region’s unique agronomy, backed by a Turfgrass degree from North Carolina State University. His resume features an impressive progression through some of the country’s highly regarded golf facilities:

Carmel Country Club: Downs joined Carmel in 2016 as an Assistant Superintendent. He played a pivotal role in overseeing the extensive renovation of the North Course. His success and dedication led to a promotion in 2018, where he took the helm as the North Course Superintendent.

Desert Mountain (Arizona): Downs honed his skills managing the demanding and pristine conditions required at one of Arizona’s premier desert golf communities.

Gaston Country Club (Gastonia, NC): He also brings valuable local experience from his time at Gaston Country Club, just a short drive from the Tega Cay community.
Colleagues and industry peers note that Downs excels not only in crafting exceptional turf conditions but also in the vital behind-the-scenes work of efficiently managing course resources and staff.
Family and Life Outside the Greens
When he isn’t walking the fairways and inspecting the greens, Downs is a dedicated family man. He enjoys spending his time away from the club with his wife, Danielle, and their newborn son, Whitson. And like any true turfgrass professional, he still loves the game itself, frequently enjoying a round of golf with friends.

The hiring of Downs comes at a highly anticipated time for Tega Cay.
