Indian Land Woman Identified as Victim in Fatal Rock Hill Crash; Driver Charged

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The York County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman killed in a violent multi-vehicle collision on Celanese Road last Friday afternoon.

Officials confirmed Monday that Marybeth Robinson, 43, of Indian Land, died following the crash near the Interstate 77 interchange.

According to the Rock Hill Police Department, the incident began when a Hyundai driven by 21-year-old Joel Laron Smith exited I-77 at a high rate of speed. Investigators say Smith lost control of the vehicle, causing it to go airborne. The car then crossed over the median and into oncoming traffic, striking two other vehicles.

Robinson, who was driving one of the vehicles struck by the airborne car, was treated at the scene by EMS and transported to Piedmont Medical Center. She was pronounced dead by hospital staff in the emergency department later that day.

Police have arrested Smith in connection with the fatal wreck. He has been charged with reckless homicide and operating an uninsured vehicle. Investigators have cited excessive speed as the primary contributing factor to the crash.

Autopsy and toxicology results for Robinson are currently pending. The Rock Hill Police Department noted that the investigation into the collision is ongoing.
