ROCK HILL, S.C. — Health officials are urging caution after a fox found in Rock Hill tested positive for rabies, marking the first confirmed case of the virus in York County this year.
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed the diagnosis on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, after the animal was submitted for laboratory testing the previous day.
Location and Exposure
The fox was discovered near the intersection of Davidson Woods Drive and Oakdale Road.
According to DPH officials:
-
No humans are known to have been exposed to the animal.
-
One dog was exposed and will be quarantined in accordance with the South Carolina Rabies Control Act.
Public Safety Advice
Health officials are using this incident to remind residents that avoidance is the best policy when it comes to wildlife.
“To reduce the risk of getting rabies, always give wild and stray animals plenty of space,” said Terri McCollister, Rabies Program Manager. “If you see an animal in need, avoid touching it and contact someone trained in handling animals, such as your local animal control officer, wildlife control operator, or wildlife rehabilitator.”
DPH defines exposure as direct contact with saliva or brain/nervous system tissue from an infected animal, typically through broken skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). Residents are advised to treat any pet found with wounds of unknown origin as potentially exposed.
By the Numbers
While this is the first case in York County for 2026, the virus remains active across the state.
-
Statewide 2026: There have been 13 confirmed cases of rabid animals in South Carolina so far this year.
-
Historical Context: In 2025, York County saw nine confirmed cases out of 101 statewide. Since 2002, the state has averaged approximately 136 positive cases annually.
What to Do
Vaccinating pets remains one of the most effective ways to protect against the disease.
If you believe you, a family member, or a pet has come into contact with this fox or another potentially rabid animal, officials urge you to contact the DPH Columbia office immediately:
