I-485 Express Lanes Open in South Charlotte: New Interchanges, Pricing Rules, and What Drivers Need to Know

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After years of construction barrels and brake lights, a major shift in south Charlotte’s traffic pattern has arrived. The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and N.C. Turnpike Authority (NCTA) officially opened the new I-485 Express Lanes to traffic on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 6 a.m.

The opening follows a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Friday morning, where state officials and local leaders celebrated the completion of the project. The new lanes add one express lane in each direction spanning approximately 17 miles between I-77 and U.S. 74.

“Today marks the culmination of years of hard work, collaboration and a shared goal to bring greater mobility to Charlotte and to the region,” said NCDOT Western Deputy Chief Engineer Brett Canipe. “This project will help everyone spend less time in their vehicles and more time doing other things they enjoy.”

More Than Just Toll Lanes

While the express lanes are the headline feature, the project delivered significant upgrades to the general-purpose lanes as well. According to the NCDOT, the construction included:

  • General Lane Widening: An additional free, general-purpose lane in each direction between Rea Road and Providence Road.

  • New Interchange: A completely new interchange at Weddington Road.

  • Interchange Improvements: Upgrades to the E. John Street interchange in Matthews.

  • Bridge Widening: A wider bridge carrying Ballantyne Commons Parkway over I-485.

Officials noted that while the lanes are open, drivers should remain cautious as final construction activities continue near E. John Street and Weddington Road.

How Pricing Works: Fixed Now, Dynamic Later

Drivers wishing to use the express lanes will pay tolls based on vehicle size, time of day, and day of the week.

  • Initial Phase: Rates are currently fixed according to a schedule.

  • Future Phase: Within 12 months, the system will switch to dynamic pricing. Rates will fluctuate based on real-time traffic volume and speed, designed to keep express lane traffic moving at a minimum of 45 mph.

Important Billing Note: For the first few weeks of operation, roadway transactions are being manually reviewed for accuracy. As a result, drivers may see a delay of several days before trips appear on their NC Quick Pass accounts.

No Free HOV Travel

A key distinction for local commuters is the difference between these new lanes and the I-77 Express Lanes north of the city. Unlike I-77 North, there is no discounted or free travel for High-Occupancy Vehicles (HOV/carpooling) on the I-485 Express Lanes.

However, toll-free travel is available for:

  • Riders using Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Vanpool rideshare services.

  • Transit vehicles with an NC Quick Pass Transit account.

  • First responders (law enforcement, fire, rescue, medical) responding to emergencies with an NC Quick Pass account.

The Cost of Convenience

The price drivers pay depends heavily on whether they have a transponder.

  • NC Quick Pass Holders: Drivers with a transponder pay the lowest rate—saving 50% on tolls. The pricing signs on the roadway display this discounted rate.

  • Bill by Mail: Drivers without a pass will be identified by their license plate and mailed an invoice. They will be charged two times the posted rate.

For vehicles longer than 22 feet (or those pulling trailers), the rate is doubled.

Drivers can sign up for an account at ncquickpass.com or purchase a sticker transponder at retailers including Harris Teeter, Speedway, and 7-Eleven.
