In a major recognition of the region’s growing appeal, Rock Hill has been ranked as the 22nd most desirable city in the United States, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report Moving Trends report. The ranking places Rock Hill in the top tier of national municipalities, reflecting its rise as a premier destination for families, professionals, and retirees.
The report, which analyzes consumer search interest and inbound-to-outbound migration ratios, identifies the locations Americans are most eager to call home. Rock Hill’s high placement is attributed to its unique combination of suburban charm, proximity to the Charlotte metropolitan area, and a robust local job market that continues to outpace national averages.
South Carolina Leads the Nation
The success of Rock Hill is part of a broader trend that has seen the Palmetto State become the most sought-after relocation destination in the country. South Carolina claimed the #1 spot for inbound migration, driven by its affordability, mild climate, and high quality of life.
Statewide, South Carolina featured seven cities and six counties in the national top rankings. Other local standouts included Conway and Myrtle Beach, which ranked as the #1 and #3 most desirable cities respectively, further cementing the state’s dominance in the 2026 moving trends.
York County’s National Standing
The report also highlighted the strength of York County as a whole, ranking it as the 17th most desirable county in the United States. York County’s appeal—encompassing Tega Cay, Fort Mill, and Rock Hill—is bolstered by its highly-rated school districts, lower tax burdens compared to neighboring regions, and extensive recreational assets such as the Catawba River and local trail networks.
North Carolina and the Regional Boom
The “Carolina Corridor” continues to be the most active moving zone in the nation. North Carolina also posted impressive numbers, ranking as the 4th most desirable state in the country. North Carolina leads the nation with 11 top-ranked counties, including Gaston County at #10 and Union County at #39.
The report notes that the Southern region contains 45 of the 50 most-searched counties in the country. This regional boom is largely attributed to a desire for “practicality,” with movers prioritizing areas where they can find a manageable cost of living without sacrificing cultural amenities or outdoor access.
As Rock Hill and York County continue to attract national attention, local officials are preparing for continued growth. The #22 national ranking for Rock Hill serves as a testament to the city’s successful redevelopment efforts and its standing as a premier community in the American Southeast.
