Athletes from York, Lancaster, and Chester counties delivered a powerful performance at the South Carolina State Individual Wrestling Championships. Competitors from local high schools faced off against the best in the state, bringing home multiple individual titles and podium finishes across various divisions.
Class 5A Standouts
In the 5A division, Fort Mill and Catawba Ridge celebrated state champions. Lincoln Greene of Fort Mill secured the 150 pound state title with an 8 to 0 major decision over Max Johnson. In the heavyweight division, Alex Johnson of Catawba Ridge claimed the 285 pound championship with a 4 to 1 decision against Malachi Miles.
Several other local wrestlers reached the state finals. Jessiah Rockeymore of Rock Hill took second place at 106 pounds after a close 11 to 9 match. Trey Robinson, also from Rock Hill, earned a second place finish at 215 pounds. Indian Land saw multiple runners up, with Josiah Fogarty taking second at 132 pounds and Kayden Fogarty finishing second in the 144 pound class. Tyrone Norris of Clover earned silver at 157 pounds.
Other notable 5A finishes included Brody Harris of Fort Mill, who placed fourth at 113 pounds, and Ethan Vaught of Clover, who secured third place at 190 pounds with a 10 to 4 victory.
Class 4A Dominance
South Pointe and York high schools led the charge in the 4A classification. Tristan Mobley of South Pointe became the 165 pound state champion after a 10 to 1 major decision. His teammate Kj Burg also reached the top of the podium, winning the 190 pound title with a 17 to 1 technical fall. Alex Mestas added to the South Pointe medal count with a third place finish at 126 pounds.
York High School also crowned a state champion as Cameron Adkins won the 138 pound title with an 8 to 1 decision. York saw two other wrestlers reach the championship round, with Jason Blackman finishing second at 150 pounds and Hayden Adkins taking second at 157 pounds. Weston Hershey of York also earned a podium spot, finishing fourth in the 175 pound class.
Class 2A and 1A Success
The Class 2A and 1A divisions saw significant success from Buford and Chester. Tucker Bohn of Buford dominated the 215 pound weight class, winning the championship with a 21 to 6 technical fall. Buford also earned two other top finishes, with Nathan Gardner taking third place at 138 pounds and E’adrian West securing a fourth place finish at 190 pounds.
Chester High School was a dominant force in this division, crowning multiple state champions. Jaheem Rambert won the 126 pound title with a technical fall, and Darriyarn Baxley took the 190 pound championship. Eris Steele added another title for Chester at 175 pounds. Other podium finishers for Chester included Andre Hall, who took second at 120 pounds, Omari Pendergrass, who finished third at 144 pounds, and Jayren Holly, who earned second place at 285 pounds.
Girls State Championships
The girls division featured a wealth of talent from local programs. Audrey Naughten of Rock Hill claimed the 125 pound state title with a 4 to 3 victory. Alyciah Thomas, also from Rock Hill, secured the 155 pound championship with a pin at the 3 minute 13 second mark. Chester’s Miheaven Evans also won a state title, pinning her opponent in the 135 pound final in just 23 seconds.
Carson Robertson of Catawba Ridge became the 100 pound state champion after an 11 to 0 major decision. Addie Shaw of Indian Land finished as the runner up in that same weight class. Rock Hill’s Reagan Beard also earned a second place finish at 120 pounds.
Other local podium finishers included Madi Beck of Rock Hill, who took third at 105 pounds, and Legend Pender of Catawba Ridge, who secured third at 125 pounds. Kerrington Ratliff of Northwestern, Katelynne Blythe of South Pointe, and Natalia Clyburn of Lancaster all fought hard to reach the final rounds of their respective brackets, each securing a fourth place finish.
