Fort Mill Operations Stabilize as Ice Storm Recedes; Recovery Efforts Underway

The Town of Fort Mill is reporting stable conditions Monday morning following a significant winter ice storm that moved through the region over the weekend. According to an operational update released at 7:00 AM, town officials noted only a limited number of incidents overnight and, notably, zero power outages within town limits.

In response to the improving conditions, the Town’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has transitioned to Level 3 (Deactivation). While the EOC and local warming centers remain staged and ready in the event that high winds trigger new utility failures, the immediate threat has subsided.

Road and Facility Status

Public Works crews have been active since the early morning hours clearing and salting critical town facilities. Targeted areas include Town Hall, local fire stations, the wastewater treatment plant, and the Town Hall Annex.

Plowing and salting operations are ongoing for all main and “spine” roads. Drivers are urged to remain cautious, as extra attention is being directed toward bridges and historically icy trouble spots, specifically:

  • Clebourne Street

  • Parkway areas near US Foods

  • Main Street: Currently closed for treatment. Public Works crews are working to de-ice the corridor and will reopen it to traffic once conditions are deemed safe.

Service Disruptions and Administrative Closures

While emergency response is winding down, several town services remain affected today:

  • Town Hall: The building is closed to the public today, Monday, Jan. 26, with staff working remotely. Normal in-person operations are expected to resume on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

  • Sanitation: There will be no trash, recycling, or leaf collection today. Residents are asked to leave their bins near the curb, as crews plan to catch up on collections later this week.

  • Communication: Despite the physical office closure, public calls are being answered and resident concerns are being addressed remotely.

Weather Outlook and Refreeze Warning

The National Weather Service reports a high of 40°F for Fort Mill today with patchy morning fog giving way to sunny skies. However, a significant refreeze is expected tonight as temperatures drop to a low of 16°F.

Residents are reminded that freezing overnight temperatures will likely cause melting snow and ice to refreeze on roads, bridges, and sidewalks. Continued caution is advised for anyone traveling through Tuesday morning.
