The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is officially recruiting local agencies, non-profits, and faith-based organizations to participate in its 2026 summer food service initiatives. The Summer Break Café and Seamless Summer Option programs, funded by the USDA, aim to bridge the nutritional gap for children when school is not in session.
Last year, these partnerships saw a 54% increase in service, delivering more than 5.4 million meals to students across the state. These programs target children 18 and younger, particularly in areas where food insecurity is prevalent. According to state data, approximately 1 in 6 children in South Carolina struggle with hunger, with minority communities often disproportionately affected.
Partnership Opportunities
Organizations can participate by acting as sponsors, meal sites, or food vendors. Approved sponsors are reimbursed for meals served and receive technical training to ensure the program meets federal standards. Meal sites are diverse, ranging from churches and recreation centers to farmers markets and hospitals.
How to Apply
Prospective sponsors must demonstrate the financial and administrative ability to manage a non-profit food service. Those interested in participating for the upcoming summer must complete the application process by February 13, 2026.
