Red Cross Declares Severe Blood Shortage in South Carolina

The American Red Cross of South Carolina has issued an urgent call for donors as the state grapples with a severe blood shortage. Recent data reveals a 35% drop in blood donations over the last month, a decline that has left the organization struggling to keep pace with hospital demand.

The current shortage is driven by a combination of seasonal factors. High rates of flu activity across the region have sidelined many regular donors, while a series of winter storms forced the cancellation of numerous blood drives. These disruptions have occurred at a time when hospitals are already under strain from a significant respiratory illness season.

When the available supply on hand falls below the level required by medical facilities, healthcare providers are forced to make difficult decisions regarding the prioritization of blood products. Currently, hospitals in South Carolina are reporting an acute need for the following:

  • Type O blood (the universal blood type used in emergencies)

  • A negative blood

  • B negative blood

A steady supply of these types is essential for treating trauma victims, patients undergoing surgery, and those receiving ongoing care for cancer or sickle cell disease.

The Red Cross is urging all healthy, eligible individuals to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. To streamline the process, prospective donors can use the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit the official website at redcrossblood.org, or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

To encourage participation during this critical period, the Red Cross has partnered with the NFL for a special promotion. Any individual who gives blood or platelets by Jan. 25 will be automatically entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California. The prize package includes game tickets, airfare, hotel accommodations, and a $1,000 gift card for expenses.
