YORK, S.C. — An 18-year-old male has been detained and a 72-year-old man is hospitalized following a road rage incident that escalated into a shootout near York Comprehensive High School on Saturday morning.
The York Police Department reported that the confrontation occurred late Saturday morning on Alexander Love Highway. According to investigators, the dispute between the two drivers intensified until both individuals, who were armed with pistols, exchanged gunfire.
The 72-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the arm during the altercation. Officials stated that his injuries are non-life-threatening. He was treated at the scene before being transported to a local medical facility for further care. The 18-year-old involved was detained by officers as the investigation continues.
The incident caused significant disruption in the area. Authorities closed Alexander Love Highway between Lincoln Road and Charlotte Highway to process the scene, interview witnesses, and collect evidence. Police have asked the public to avoid the area while they work to maintain safety during the investigation.
Because the incident concluded in front of York Comprehensive High School, the location drew immediate concern. However, York School District 1 released a statement clarifying that the event was unrelated to the school. The district noted that while the road rage incident ended in front of the campus and led to a law enforcement presence, it did not involve the high school or the school district.
Police confirmed that no students, staff, or faculty were involved in the incident and emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the campus. School operations remain unaffected, and regular activities will continue as scheduled.
