INDIAN LAND, S.C. – The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has launched a homicide investigation following the discovery of a deceased male behind a business in Indian Land on Monday morning.
Deputies were dispatched to 9481 Yarborough Road just before noon on Monday, January 5, 2026. Upon arrival, they located a 74-year-old male deceased near a white Chevrolet van in the rear parking lot of The Designers Marketplace.
According to investigators, the victim was an employee of the furnishing business. The establishment, along with others in the complex, had been closed over the weekend. Authorities noted that it is currently unknown how long the victim had been at the location before being discovered. The body was found by an individual who had driven to the rear of the property to visit the business.
Preliminary reports indicate the victim suffered apparent gunshot wounds. Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and confirmed the fatality. The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office is handling the identification process and has scheduled an autopsy. While the victim has been identified by law enforcement, his name is being withheld at this time.
Sheriff Barry Faile addressed the community regarding the incident, emphasizing that while no arrests have been made, investigators do not believe there is an active threat to the public.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this victim,” Sheriff Faile said. “There are many unanswered questions about this homicide on the front end of the investigation, but much information has already been gathered which we believe will lead us to a resolution.”
The Violent Crime Task Force and the Crime Scene and Evidence Division remain on the scene collecting evidence and interviewing potential witnesses.
