Healthy Living with Dr. Hall: How Safe Is It to Walk Barefoot at Home? Doctors Explain

Kicking off your shoes at home can feel freeing — but is it good or bad for your feet? Experts say walking barefoot indoors can actually help strengthen your feet, though there are a few things to keep in mind. When you go barefoot — meaning no shoes or socks — your foot muscles work harder to support your body.

Dr. Robert Conenello, a podiatrist, says this helps keep those small muscles strong, which is important for balance and mobility especially as we age. Many foot problems, he adds, come from weak muscles that don’t get used enough
because we wear shoes all day.

Dermatologist Dr. Hannah Kopelman agrees and adds that barefoot time lets your skin breathe. This helps prevent sweaty buildup that can lead to fungal infections like athlete’s foot. Feeling the texture of the floor can even have a calming, grounding effect, similar to a light foot massage.

Still, barefoot walking isn’t risk-free. Floors can collect dust, pet dander, or cleaning chemicals that may irritate sensitive skin. There’s also the chance of stepping on something sharp or slipping. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or skin conditions like eczema should avoid going barefoot since small injuries can lead to complications. Standing barefoot for long periods on hard floors can also cause foot fatigue or heel pain. In those cases, experts suggest wearing soft, supportive shoes or socks to protect your feet.

In short, walking barefoot around a clean home can help build foot strength, improve circulation, and even boost mindfulness. Just keep your floors clean, wash your feet often, and wear protection if you have medical issues or spend lots of time standing. Like most things, balance is key — a little barefoot time can go a long way toward keeping your feet healthy.
