The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) is marking the final week of its Senior Appreciation Month by spotlighting two animals in need of permanent homes — one senior dog and one younger cat who has spent more than two years at the rescue.
BlueGill: Cat of the Week
BlueGill, a 3-year-old tuxedo cat, has been at HSYC for 906 days. She arrived as an owner surrender and has spent more time at the rescue than she did in her previous home. Staff describe her as independent, observant, and slow to trust, but social with visitors who engage her with toys.
BlueGill spends most of her time in the Cat Lounge, where she watches birds from the window and relaxes on the cat tree. She is spayed, vaccinated, tested, and microchipped. HSYC says she would do best in a patient home that can give her time to adjust.
Anyone interested in meeting BlueGill can visit the shelter or call 803-802-0902. Adoption requirements are available on the HSYC website.
Franklin: Dog of the Week
Franklin, a senior dog estimated to be about 8 years and 8 months old, is featured again as he continues his search for a permanent home. He arrived at the rescue as a stray and is described as friendly, energetic, and strongly bonded to people.
Franklin weighs between 55 and 60 pounds and has completed HSYC’s “zoom room” training program. Staff report that he enjoys walks, toys, and has several endearing quirks, including carrying a toy with him when heading out for exercise.
He is available for adoption through the same contact number, and HSYC encourages potential adopters to meet him in person.
Community Initiatives and Seasonal Programs
HSYC is promoting several seasonal efforts, including its Secret Santa program and “Deck the Halls (Fencing the Rescue),” which supports improvements at the facility. The organization encourages community involvement through donations of supplies, financial contributions, volunteer work, and shopping at its PAWSibilities Thrift Shop, online stores, and seasonal boutique.
The rescue reports that so far in 2025, it has placed 709 animals — 154 dogs and 555 cats — into permanent homes.
More information about programs, events, and adoptable animals is available at humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org or by visiting the shelter at 8177 Regent Parkway in Fort Mill.
