Lancaster County to Hold Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Coroner’s Facility

Lancaster County, South Carolina – The groundbreaking for the new Lancaster County Coroner’s Office will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

The office, which will be located at 244 Old Dixie Road in Lancaster, South Carolina, is scheduled to be completed by December 2026. The new office will be 8,500 square feet and is being built by the Fern Creek Group.

The new facility will have 1,181 square feet of storage space for evidence, files, and supplies; as well as a 1,068-square foot of autopsy suite. It will also have a 1,500-square foot sallyport and 10 offices for personnel. The new coroner’s office will be able to hold 35 decedents, compared to the current office which holds less than 10.

Lancaster County Coroner, Karla Knight Deese says, “On behalf of our entire staff, I want to express our gratitude to the council for their continued support and funding. Their investment not only strengthens our operations but also affirms the vital role we play in serving our community with integrity and compassion and making a meaningful difference every day.”

The Lancaster County Council has committed nearly $3 million of funds from the federal government as part of the Coronavirus pandemic American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Lancaster County Council Chairman Brian Carnes stated about the project: “The construction of this new Coroner’s Office represents our continued commitment to providing the highest level of service to Lancaster County residents. County Council is proud to support this important project and to equip our Coroner’s Office with the state-of-the-art tools needed to meet the community’s growing needs.”
