Richland County Man Charged Following Double Shooting at South Carolina State University

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — An 18-year-old from Richland County has been arrested and charged in connection with one of two shootings that occurred Saturday night on the campus of South Carolina State University.

According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Matthew Daniel McCoy was charged with pointing and presenting a firearm at a person, and carrying a weapon on school property. The charges stem from a shooting incident that left one man injured on October 4, 2025. McCoy was taken into custody and booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center on Sunday.

The incident is one of two separate shootings that occurred on the campus Saturday evening. In the other, unrelated incident, a woman was killed. Her identity has not yet been released by the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.

Both investigations remain active and ongoing, and authorities have stated they do not believe the two shootings are connected at this time.

SLED was requested to investigate by the South Carolina State University Department of Public Safety. The case against McCoy will be prosecuted by the First Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

Authorities are asking anyone with information related to either shooting to contact SLED at (866) 472-8477 or via email at [email protected].
