Military commanders from South Carolina’s eight installations, along with Fort Gordon, Georgia, gathered today for the annual Commanders Brief to the Governor, focusing on critical quality of life issues affecting service members and their families.
The commanders provided updates to Governor Henry McMaster and South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs Secretary Todd B. McCaffrey at the Pastides Alumni Center in Columbia. The briefing serves to inform state leaders on how South Carolina can best support the military community’s mission readiness and well-being.
Key issues highlighted during the discussion included persistent challenges with housing affordability and availability, ensuring access to quality childcare and education for military families, and mitigating the impact of traffic congestion near major military installations.
In addition to family support topics, the commanders addressed operational concerns, including updates on energy resilience initiatives at the installations and security challenges posed by the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) near military sites.
The annual briefing underscores the importance of the state’s relationship with the military to ensure South Carolina remains a vital component of national defense. The information shared is intended to guide state efforts to assist commanders in resolving the logistical and personal challenges faced by service members stationed across the Carolinas.
