Siren Test Scheduled for Oct. 8 Near Catawba and McGuire Nuclear Stations

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Duke Energy, in coordination with local emergency management agencies, will conduct a full-volume test of outdoor warning sirens surrounding the Catawba and McGuire nuclear stations on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The test will activate 89 sirens within a 10-mile radius of the Catawba Nuclear Station in York County, South Carolina, and 67 sirens near the McGuire Nuclear Station in Huntersville, North Carolina. Sirens will sound for approximately three minutes during the test. In some locations, multiple soundings may be necessary to complete system checks.

Officials emphasize that no public action is required during the test.

The siren system is a key part of the emergency preparedness plans for the nuclear stations. While this is only a scheduled test, residents are reminded that in an actual emergency, the sirens would be followed by emergency information broadcast on local radio and television stations through the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

The test is conducted in cooperation with emergency management departments in Catawba, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, and Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina and York County in South Carolina.
