SC Lawmakers, Universities Discuss Campus Safety Following Recent Threats

In response to a rise in shootings, threats, and swatting hoaxes on college campuses nationwide, the South Carolina House of Representatives Higher Education Subcommittee has convened with state universities to discuss and enhance campus security measures.

The meeting was called to ensure that South Carolina’s colleges are prepared for a variety of threats. One key area of focus is the reassessment of security staffing for large on-campus events. A shooting death at a university in Utah has prompted administrators to consider increasing security presence at events that previously lacked it. The goal is to make a visible display of security to deter potential threats and ensure the safety of students and staff.

The discussion also highlighted the strong partnership between campuses and local law enforcement, including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), which provides additional resources and support.

Lawmakers are also considering new measures to combat threats originating from outside of the state. Discussions included increasing penalties for swatting hoaxes and allowing for the extradition of individuals who make threats from other states. The collaboration between state agencies and universities is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that South Carolina’s college campuses remain safe environments for students.
